Thermatech® solar reflectance technology from COLORBOND® steel, solution to counter modern environment challenges

Intensity of Urban heat island (UHI) effect

Around half of the world’s human population lives in urban areas. In the near future it is expected that the global rate of urbanization will increase by 70% of the present world urban population by 2030, as urban agglomerations emerge and population migration from rural to urban/suburban areas continues. Thereby, it is not surprising that the negative impacts related to urbanization is an increasing concern capturing the attention of people worldwide.

An urban heat island (abbreviated as UHI) is where the temperature in a densely populated city is as much as 2 degrees higher than suburban or rural areas. Why? This happens because of the materials used for pavements, roads and roofs, such as concrete, asphalt (tar) and bricks, which are opaque, do not transmit light, but have higher heat capacity and thermal conductivity. UHI is also decrease air quality in the cities, due to pollution generated by industrial and automobile exhaust, higher extent of particulate matter and greater amounts of dust. Extensive research activities being conducted to mitigate risks related to UHI

What is Solar reflective index (SRI)?

The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is a measure of the solar reflectance and emissivity of materials that can be used as an indicator of how hot they are likely to become when solar radiation is incident on their surface. The lower the SRI, the hotter a material is likely to become in the sunshine.

SRI is a scale from 0 to 100. Materials that absorb and retain solar radiation (and so become hotter in sunshine) have a lower number, whilst highly reflective materials (which remain cooler in sunshine) have a higher number.

Saves Energy

Thermatech® technology helps your roof and your building stay cooler by reflecting more of the sun’s heat. When heat is reflected away from your building, air-conditioning has an easier job keeping your building cool. Using less energy to cool your building can help occupants save money on energy costs as well as potentially reduce emissions from electricity generation. In moderate to hot climates COLORBOND® steel with THERMATECH® Technology can reduce annual energy consumption by up to 20%, compared to ordinary Pre-painted steel (ordinary PPGL) roofing materials of similar colour but with a lower solar reflectance.

Help Structures Lasts Longer

COLORBOND® steel with Thermatech® technology absorbs less heat from the sun, protecting your roof and its supporting structure from extremes in heat. As a result, the stresses placed on your roof and its materials are reduced and your roof lasts longer.

Even Darker Colours Reflect More Heat

It’s widely known that lighter colours are better at reflecting heat. Now with Thermatech® technology, even the darker colours in the COLORBOND® steel range perform better without changing their appearance. So you can choose from a wider range of colours and still enjoy a thermally efficient roof.

Why are steel roofing sheets better than conventional roofing

The market of roofing sheets in India has been ever evolving. In the recent decades the roofing industry in the country has seen a paradigm shift with increase in customer engagement in selection of roofing solutions and increased customer demand in terms of value for money and aesthetics.

This has resulted into increased demand of roofing sheets in Domestic, industrial and commercial sectors.

There are various types of roofing sheets available in the market like –

Steel roofing solution has in recent times evolved as winner in roofing sheets market due to various factors ranging from Aesthetics, cost effectiveness, recyclability, low maintenance, durability and energy efficiency. Whether you are buying a home or planning of installation, here are some of the few reasons why steel is better than conventional roofing.

  • Light Weight and high strength – As compared to weight of other roofings like cement tiles, the metal roofing sheets are very light weight thus saving on the additional cost of engineering and supportive structure of the building. Metal roofing sheets can also be installed on the already existing structures/ roofs without or with minimum additional support.

  • Superior Aesthetics with design flexibility – The metal roofing sheet enhance the aesthetics of the structure and gives it a stylish look.

  • Fire/Termite resistance – Most of the metal roofing sheets are non-combustible thus proving a good resistance from fire. These are also resistant to termites unlike the conventional roofing sheets.

  • Variety of colours – Colour coated steel sheets come in a variety of aesthetically pleasing colour. One can choose from various options of colours based on their requirement and personal taste.

  • Energy efficiency – Metal roofing sheets reflects the solar rays, thus reducing cooling cost of the whole structure from 10 to 25%.

  • Availability in various profiles – Metal roofing sheets are available in various profiles along with different lengths, widths and thickness.

  • Recyclability – Metal roofing sheets are sustainable and can be completely recycled. The left over scraps, old panels and tear off metal can be 100% recycled for any other future metal products.

  • Durability and strength – Along with the aesthetic appeal metal roofing sheets also come with higher durability and high strength resulting in longer life span, these sheets resist corrosion, providing longer service life and less maintenance.

  • Weather resistant – Steel roofing sheets have higher resistance to weather as compared to other conventional roofing materials this includes cracking, leakage etc.

  • Maintenance free/ requires less maintenance – As compared to the traditional roofing, these sheets require less maintenance. Due to resistance to weather, higher durability these roofs requires very less or no maintenance, thus saving on the recurring cost to maintain the structure.

  • Number of applications – The steel roofing sheets can be used for many type of applications by the house owners, like roof on roof, portico, garage, porches etc. due to its cost effectiveness and higher durability it is one of the most preferred medium for primary as well as secondary roofing applications.

Based on the various benefits discussed here, it can very well be concluded that with proper installation steel sheets are one of the trending and most sort after roofing solution available in the market. Along with increasing the aesthetics and style quotient of the building they are highly durable and low maintenance. These are cost effective and can be used for various applications in residential as well as commercial sectors.

Design Flexibility in steel building construction, made possible with COLORBOND® steel

In this blog, we explore the realms of creativity that are possible using steel for roofing and wall cladding applications. Not only does metal coated and pre-painted steel offer creative options for shape and design, there are several other benefits which award ‘flexibility’ to designers and builders.
Structures made from steel can offer looks ranging from the classic to the contemporary. Metal coated and pre-painted steel can also be used to add accents and flavour to otherwise utilitarian industrial or commercial constructions.

Discover Design Flexibility in steel buildings, and remember you are only limited by your imagination!

While we consider design flexibility with steel cladding material, the following considerations become pertinent:

  • Can this material be used for industrial /commercial purposes?
  • Is this material suitable for long spans & complex shapes, sizes?
  • How easy is it to use? Can local unskilled labour be used?
  • Can you make unique, artistic designs with it?
  • How does it compare on project costs?
  • Are there time constraints to build a structure with such material?
  • Can one use space more effectively by using this material?

A decade ago, construction was limited to modular designs available only in regular dimensions. The “boxy, industrial look” of buildings is now a thing of the past. Due to the unique properties of steel, the client is no longer forced to fit his needs around predefined modules. Building designers today have at their disposal, a growing number of techniques and products that help them essential function of a building, while aesthetics of building to be ensured

Roofing material

Metal roofs have been a preferred options covering for commercial, institutional and industrial buildings for years because of their ability to protect against the elements, to allow water to drain away from the roof surface, and to keep building contents and occupants dry and comfortable. Coated steel also provides the designer with several options to create unique and aesthetic. Following aspects are essential considerations

  1. Roof fixing

The two possible varieties of roofing are standing roof or seam with fasteners. The advantage of standing seam roofs has given designers flexibility for innovation with building structures and
styles while ensuring a leak proof roof.

  2. Designs with curved roof

Designing with coated steel allows for both traditional straight roof sheeting as well as innovative curved roofing designs. The strength of coated steel provides virtually limitless design
possibilities. The curved roof helps create additional indoor space while still meeting strict building height guidelines. Due to its flexibility, coated steel is capable of accommodating the double radius of the curved roof, with great accuracy of the curves. From flowing curves to precision flatness, metal is easy and economical to install. This freedom of design provides the architect and owner the opportunity to build within a wide range of styles and create an image that will endure.

  3. Designs with sloped roofs

Recently, building owners and architects have come to recognise and appreciate the attributes of “low slope” metal roofs such as their long service life, low life cycle cost, sustainability, low maintenance requirements etc. Unlike non-metal systems which require an underlying substrate or deck, “low slope”metal roofs can be applied directly over bar joists or purlins. Due to their interlocking or active fastening systems, metal roof panels are designed to meet the requirements of severe wind and uplift tests. To ensure longer life, majority of low slope roof materials are protected from the elements due to the highly durable metal coatings & Pre-painted steel
When building owners and architects require an attractive and affordable “steep slope” roof covering for a commercial project, chances are that more and more of them will choose a metal roof. Steep slope metal roofs, for example, can enhance the appearance of virtually any building due to their receptivity to various coatings and their ability to be formed into a wide variety of shapes. Because steep slope metal roofs accelerate the rate of water run-off, they also reduce the likelihood of a build-up of debris, mold and mildew. At the same time, they are less likely to experience staining from acid rain or UV degradation than non-metal steep slope systems. The durability and reliability of steep slope systems is high. No other product has done more to change the profile of architecture than steep slope metal roofing. Metal roofs have now added a new design element to a building that separates them from the less attractive flat roofs.

  4. Optimum Space Utilisation

Larger interior spaces, high clearances and spans without interior columns add flexibility of design & utility to steel buildings. The high tensile strength of steel enables excellent spanning capabilities for framing and roofing providing more flexibility in designing internal spaces that maximise opportunities for cross ventilation, helping to meet energy efficiency requirements. To obtain a desired design you can reduce the width of the joist and compensate it with heavier gauge steel without changing the spacing of members.
At times this large span is a must requirement e.g. aircraft hangar. However, it could only be achieved with self-supporting steel framing system with no need for interior walls to help bear the weight of the building. With this self-supporting steel frame interior walls can easily be eliminated, altered or relocated and large open floor plan created including raised ceilings. This excellent spanning capabilities offered by steel framing provides more flexibility in designing internal spaces that maximise opportunities for cross ventilation, helping to meet energy efficiency requirements.

  5. Ease of Construction

On-site construction of steel building is easy, highly efficient and safe, which less skilled labour can quickly learn. There is not much measuring, cutting or wet processes and the pre-manufactured fit-out can be integrated with interior and exterior fittings using local labour. Workers can be easily trained to use steel building systems in combination with other materials as well

  6. Cost Advantage

Studies from across the world suggest that pre-engineered building solutions costs less than other construction methods. The variety in steel gives options at different price points without
Compromising on the design. Steel construction offers the potential to build substantially more covered space with the same cash flow. Steel buildings can be built in much less time without increasing site resources, thus freeing capital and finite resources for other projects – “The efficiency of use of working capital”. Offsite prefabrication increases the speed, efficiency, quality and safety of construction. It is also less expensive to integrate into existing structural systems. The predictability of
    cost and program also improves

Roofing for Coastal Areas – Choosing the best roofing material for your projects in saline environments

Metal roofs are ideal when it comes to industrial roofing, due to many virtues it carries. They are tough enough to survive more with minimum maintenance. They are good reflectors of heat and protect from extremities of weather. Especially with colour coated roofing sheets, there are plenty of aesthetically pleasing options available.

While metal roofs will do exceptionally well in hot & wet areas, coastal regions pose a different challenge altogether. Several tests and years of experience have demonstrated the ill effects – such as corrosion – of exposing metal roofs to the salinity found in the air in coastal areas. While it is true that all metal roofs do not corrode at the same rate, the salty air and humidity react with the metal roof and eventually cause damage.

Roofing options for coastal regions;

Metal roofing sheets have evolved in the past few decades. Especially with the different types of coatings that prevent them from getting affected as compared to non-coated metal.

Today there are few options in metal roofing that are drafted for extreme saline or coastal topographies.

  1. Galvanised Roofing

Galvanized steel is relatively inexpensive and can provide considerable corrosion resistance if installed properly. This roofing material is made of alloyed steel with a zinc coating, which will protect your roof from rust, strong winds, and rain. But the lifespan of galvanised roofs largely depends on the thickness of galvanisation. Higher the galvanisation thickness, greater is the lifespan but this also increases the cost of the roof.

  2. Aluminium Roofing

Aluminium roofs have grown in popularity recently, due to their resistance to corrosion and their energy efficiency. Aluminium reflects light, emits heat, and can save you some money on heating and cooling costs for your building.
While aluminium has greater corrosion resistance, it lacks the strength of steel and is very expensive as compared to other roofing options

  3. Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel Roofing

Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel roofing combines the advantages of both galvanised roofing and aluminium roofing and provides optimum performance at lower costs.

Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel is easily available and is widely used all over the world for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructural applications.

An advantage that Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel has over normal galvanized material is that it has enhanced protection abilities. Over time, Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel tends to perform better than galvanized steel, especially when exposed to water or other liquids that can speed up the oxidation process. Even after a few decades, Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel will be less likely to rust than normal galvanized steel.

Tata BlueScope Steel manufactures and supplies variant of Zinc-Aluminium alloy coated steel, specifically designed and tested for severe marine climates; COLORBOND® Ultra steel . This products from Tata BlueScope Steel offers you aesthetics and long-lasting performance; with excellent protection from erratic weather conditions.

What is so different in COLORBOND® Ultra steel ?

COLORBOND® Ultra steel roofing sheets offer an attractive, long-lasting cladding material with excellent protection against the effects of severe industrial environments such as heavy dust, emissions, contact with heat, moisture, corrosive chemicals or acids.

The factors that make COLORBOND® Ultra steel the best choice for coastal regions are;

Thinking about re-roofing, how about a transformation in your roof system

Thinking about re-roofing, how about a transformation in your roof system

Industrial roofing structures often deteriorate due to prevailing weather conditions, exposure to chemicals or pollutants and several other environmental factors. Time and climatic conditions cause a lot of wear and tear of commercial and industrial roofing structures and components. After considerable years of existence, roofing of any given industrial or commercial facility needs an overhaul or complete re-roofing in some cases.

Industrial roofing costs vary widely and may seem expensive regardless of the type or quality. But it is this roofing that is the only thing standing between your business and the harsh environmental conditions. Roofing failures can cause damage to expensive equipment and result in increased downtime. Unattended roof problems can cause financial loses or even spell an end for your profitable business.

So, how do you know that it is the right time to upgrade your Roof?

Here are some important signs that show that your roof needs repairs and replacement

  1. Age of the Roof
Most experts agree that a typical GI or an asbestos roof will last between 8-12 years depending on the prevailing weather conditions. If it is older that 10-12 years, chances are the roof needs to be replaced
  2. Interior Water Incursion
This is the most obvious sign of a roof damage. If left unattended, the problem aggravates and turns into serious water incursions. Reaching out to a professional for an assessment is the right thing to do in such a situation
  3. Deteriorated asbestos roofs
There are many industrial clusters in India which were established in the 1990s. Many buildings were built by using asbestos roofs. These buildings now definitely need their old deteriorated roofs to be replaced
  4. Deterioration Of Roof Supports and sagging roofs
If there are signs of such dips, low spots or sagging of roofs and areas on roof with water pooling, this may indicate that the underpinnings and supports of the roof have been damaged. In case of insulated roofs, the insulation is soaked wet and contracted and the joists and rafters holding up the roof are broken or sagged.
  5. Corrosion and blistering
Humid climate, proximity to sea and pollution can cause corrosion in metal roofs. The corroded roofs are prone to leakages, higher maintenance and further result in damages to equipment under the roof.

Assessment and allocation of funds is only the initial step a facility manager or owner takes while planning for a Re-roofing project. Selection of the right roofing materials and hiring a capable roofing contractor is the most important factor to make sure the re-roofing project is completed successfully.

Selecting the Right Roofing service provider

In India, the process of re-roofing is indeed complex and facility owners or managers often face many challenges during the process. Fragmented suppliers, absence of one-stop-solution and lack of scalability as per project requirement; are some of the issues faced while taking the right decision.

While considering re-roofing services, it can be tempting to go for the lowest bid. The lowest bid holder may save your business capital in the short term but over time such a decision can have an adverse effect and result into higher losses. In an effort to offer a lower price, the contractor may use cheaper materials, unsafe work practices and untrained manpower or the contractor may be uninsured which can further lead the fate of project into uncertainty.

Below are some of factors to consider while selecting a roofing contractor

  1. Installation expertise and quality workmanship
  2. Cost effectiveness
  3. Quick turnaround time
  4. Usage of high quality roofing products
  5. Re roofing techniques that enable minimal downtime of your business operations
  6. Insurance, licences and certifications
  7. Recommendation and references

Going for a re-roofing project is a costly and long term investment for facility owners seeking quality, durability and assurance.

Light Gauge Framing System (LGFS): A Smart and sustainable Steel building technology

Light Gauge Framing System (LGFS) or Light gauge Steel framing (LGSF) is a construction technology using cold-formed steel as the construction material. It can be used for roof systems, floor systems, wall systems, roof panels, decks, or the entire buildings. They can also be used as individual framing members such as studs, joists, headers, and truss members.

Light Steel Frame members can also serve as both primary structures and secondary structures. An example of the Light Steel Framing used as primary structures is the webbed steel trusses. Steel studs act as secondary structures by providing lateral support to exterior wall finish since they rely on the primary structure for support.

Light Gauge Framing System (LGFS)

Light Gauge Framing System (LGFS) buildings can be used as substitute of RCC/traditional buildings. It is used to create frames for external walls, floor, internal walls etc. These are used as the base on which suitable boards and materials are used to cover the framing. LGSF buildings look similar to traditional RCC buildings after completion

Factors to Be Considered While Designing A Roof System

Selecting & specifying the most appropriate roof system for a project requires solid past experience with several of the available materials and an understanding of roof assembly materials and system options. This article aims to provide design guidance for high-performance industrial roofing sheets. Shared below are the factors to be considered while designing an industrial roof system.

  1. Load Acting on The Roof: Roofs are constantly under pressure. A roof must be built to endure both upward and downward pressure acting on it. Here are a few weights that industrial roofing sheets are subjected to:
    • Dead Load: This includes the weight of the roof structure itself, self-weight of sheeting and purlins, rooftop solar, platforms and walkways along with all the permanently attached materials or structures. Metal roofing sheets in general, are stronger, yet lighter as compared to other roofing options.
    • Live Load: People walking or working on the roof contribute to a load of around 75kg/sqm (as per IS 875: Part 2)
    • Collateral Load: Any hanging load from purlins
    • Wind Uplift Load: Wind uplift load refers to the weight that hits the wall of a building and disperses upwards, creating an uplift force on the roof. This load is resisted by the roof’s downward pushing dead load.
  2. Effective Roof Slope
  3. Roof slope and Roof length play an important role in the selection of profile as well as in gutter design. An increase in the roof slope increases the discharge speed of the water, thereby affecting the gutter and downspout design measurements. A Shallow roof slope and a longer roof length with many numbers of end laps increase the vulnerability of water leakages as the wind will always carry water which will try to penetrate the end laps. In case of a longer roof with lesser crest depth, heavy rains will lead to greater accumulation of water towards eave gutter. This water will try to escape from side laps. If the site is located in a geography where there are high day and night temperature differences, the metal roof will undergo thermal expansion and contraction which will enlarge holes around the screw and lead to leakages. The best bet for shallow roof slope and longer roof will be concealed site roll formed single length panel.

  4. Choosing the Right Roof Profile and Its Thickness
  5. Roof profile sheets constitute a large part of a building surface and contribute to its aesthetics. It serves as a protection to the basic structure from dampness. Choosing the right roof profile includes considering both, the roof slope and the general view of the building. Low-slope roofs require wide-based profiles to allow the rainwater to discharge. Steeper slopes enable to use more patterned profiles. Thickness of the roof profile  plays an important role based on the purlin spacing.

  6. Effective Purlin Spacing
  7. Purlins are secondary members mounted on Columns and Rafters. Usually, Roof Purlins support the Roof Sheets, Insulation, Vapour barrier etc.  Design of purlins depends upon the Loads on the roof, hanging (collateral) loads under the purlin and Span of the purlin. Some commonly used purlin shapes are ZEE, ZED and CEE purlins which are required for Steel Buildings. Purlin spacing varies basis the roof slopes.

  8. Optimized Purlin Section
  9. Based on wind pressure, every building structure has 2 zones: end zones & intermediate zones. For both the zones, purlin shape and thickness are designed to match the loads. Tata BlueScope Steel has 3 kinds of Purlins:

    1. CEE Purlins
    2. ZED Purlins
    3. ZEE Purlins

The purlin spacing is adjusted based on the calculation of complete wind load in any building.

  10. Coating Mass and Paint System of Roof Materials
  11. Roof coatings are designed for adding a protective layer to the roof. It increases the service life of roof assemblies LYSAGHT® range of premium pre painted roofing sheets and wall cladding sheets are manufactured from high-strength steel; COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel for longer lifespan. Zn-Al alloy coated steel ensures excellent corrosion resistance that enables longer life under extreme weather conditions, specifically for Industrial buildings, Pre Engineered buildings, infrastructure applications, Light Gauge Steel framing systems and commercial applications Wall cladding and roofing products made from COLORBOND® steel roof sheets are termite and fire-resistant.
